Hudson Valley Bald Eagles @ 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Join us at  the East Greenbush Library (not Peebles Island State Park Visitors Center) on Saturday, January 7 for Hudson Valley Bald Eagles entitled Hudson Valley Bald Eagles: Our Greatest Ecological Recovery and for the Introduction to the Bald Eagle Nest Watch program.

Since 1782, the Bald Eagle has been our national bird. However, the last 230 years have been difficult for them. During this presentation, we will travel across those centuries to see how the Bald Eagle evolved from an honored symbol to a target for human ignorance and neglect.  This downward spiral culminated in the mid-20th century with their extirpation from New York State from the effects of DDT. They were subsequently placed on the Federal Endangered Species List.  The final chapter in this story finds the Bald Eagle rising from near ruin to their present day abundance, and a recovery so complete that you may see an eagle any day of the year, anywhere in the Hudson Valley.

This will also serve as an introduction to the ASCR’s new Bald Eagle Nest Watch program where you will learn more about how to become a citizen scientist to help conserve the next generation of Bald Eagles. Complimentary coffee and refreshments will be provided during the talk.

Tom Lake, Hudson River Estuary Program Naturalist for the N.Y.S. Department of Environmental Conservation, will be the guest speaker for this program. In addition to his ongoing work with eagles, he has compiled and edited the Hudson River Almanac, a weekly natural history journal, for 20 years.  He also teaches Anthropology and Archaeology at SUNY Dutchess Community College.

This event is free and open the Public, but registration is required.  Please contact the Library at  518-708-7825 or email Drew Cashman at for more information and to register.
