Volunteer Conservation Day! Invasive Wild Parsnip Removal Day! @ 9:30am - 12:30pm
Location: Thacher State Park. Meet @ Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center, 87 Nature Center Way, Voorheesville, NY 12186

We Need YOUR Help! Come out and help remove Wild Parsnip in Thacher Park’s fields that are habitat for grassland, ground nesting birds such as the Bobolink, which has been breeding in the Park annually for years.

To register or for more information, please email Laurel Tormey-Cole at:

This project is done around mid-July, because this is the time of year when the plants are in flower and are tall enough and easier to spot in the fields.
Be sure to wear a light weight long sleeved shirt, pants, closed toe footwear, and a hat. Bring work gloves if you have them or we will supply.  Bring loppers if you have them, but if you don’t there will be a couple extras on hand. Also bring a snack and water.

WHY? Wild Parsnip can be an irritant to skin and could cause redness and allow your skin to burn in the sun.

Removal is VERY EASY! It only requires a pair of loppers to cut the thin stem right at the base of the plant. Because the plant is a biennial, flowering in its second year of growth – the roots die and do not need to be dug out.
By removing the plants in mid-July we are able to remove them before they go to seed. Once in seed they are very paper-y and fall from the plants easily. Removal at that stage is no longer productive as it only aids in seed distribution.

Come out today to Volunteer for this very worthy effort to Save our Grassland Bird Habitat!

Volunteer Dates: Sunday July 10th and/or Sunday July 17th
