Size: 2,886 acres Ecology: 27% is grassland. Low, elongated hills alternate with broad, flat-bottomed valleys. Bird Species: This site is an important grassland bird breeding area supporting the northern harrier, upland sandpiper (last observed in 1997 breeding season), vesper sparrow (observed in 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2004 breeding seasons), savannah sparrow (observed in 2004), grasshopper sparrow (last observed in 2001), Henslow’s sparrow (2-15 plus individuals in breeding season, but not seen since 1999), bobolink, and eastern meadowlark. The site also hosts breeding sharp-shinned hawks (seen regularly in breeding season and migration), American woodcock (observed in breeding season in 1997, 2000, 2003-2004), willow flycatchers (observed in breeding season in 1997, 2000), eastern bluebirds (regularly observed, 60 nest boxes), blue-winged warblers (confirmed breeder), golden-winged warblers (observed in breeding season in 1997, 2000, 2003, one individual in 2004), and prairie warblers (observed in breeding season). Additional shrub species supported at the site include eastern towhee (abundant), field sparrow (abundant), and brown thrasher.
